Digenes Akritas
An illustrated version of the Byzantine epic
(a work in progress)

isten friends, while I sing the praises and the glory
Of that thrice-blessed guardian of
The Roman frontier—Basil.
Noble scion of twin descent, Roman and Arabian.

The very brave, most daring “Digenes,”
Whose celebrated strength was bestowed upon him
As a gift from God.

He conquered all of Smyrna and
Vast lands beside the sea,
Including Syria and Babylon.
With his army he besieged the
Imposing fortress of Ancyra;
Bringing law and order to the eastern themes of Anatolikon, Cappadocia, Charzianon, Armeniakon and Colonea.

I will declare his many deeds to you.
How wild beasts and warriors, strong and brave he Overawed—
All to advance the grace of God
And honor the Mother, the Angels, and the
Great Martyrs of Orthodox Christiandom: Theodore, George and Demetrios.

Listen now as I recount, the wondrous and Extraordinary exploits of Digenes Akritas.
That most illustrious guardian and defender of
The frontier!
